Why the new book

Inevitable forms, distinctive stamps
Stock markets and the internet as ‘would have happened’ inventions. Bezos didn’t invent the everything store — he prioritized customer satisfaction over investor soothe. Jobs vs prior cell phones (StarTAC, Samsung). Churchill: life-as-preparation, but Germany invading France made the hour. Mormon success as Brigham Young’s social machine and 10% self-assessed tithe more than Smith’s modest theology.
Lost in translation
Xerox PARC 1970s simultaneous-translation moonshot: out of sight, out of mind → Russian → English = invisible idiot. Joe pivots to Bible versions (Aramaic, Dead Sea, Greek, Hebrew) and how weird doctrine gets after copies. Gospel of John: in the beginning was the Word — translation as power.
Alphabets and one king
Bronze Age collapse (not just Troy) wipes Linear B; Greece illiterate for centuries; Phoenician-derived alphabet returns ~800 BC with Greek vowels. Japanese: two syllabaries + kanji + Roman — world’s most complicated. Diamond just flew from Korea: Hangul groups letters into syllable boxes; King Sejong’s ~1430 proclamation that Chinese writing doesn’t match Korean sounds — a 600-year leader invention.
Nations, drafts, and Creoles
Joe: conscription as nationalism glue (Israel, Korea). Diamond’s counter: Finland independent 1918, identity anchored in a distinctive poetic language, not a founding draft. Hawaiian plantation newspapers show Creole complexifying in a couple of years. Papua New Guinea parliament in English or Tok Pisin — Diamond learned pigeon by talking, then grammar books; can lecture Onsager’s second law in it.
Fore, kuru, Rockefeller
First eight New Guinea years among the Fore (kuru / prion disease). Endocannibalism = dead relatives; exocannibalism = dead enemies.
