Parasocial scholar
Joe’s watched a pile of content then meets the guy. McClellan in Salt Lake, comics, Joel McHale. Main online job: combat Bible misinformation from people with more reach than Hebrew.
Editors in the mouth of Jesus
Family-division sayings as consolation for converts kicked out of houses — ‘I came to cause that.’ Joe: putting words in Jesus’s mouth. Literal inerrancy vs texts that command atrocities scholars have always had to metabolize.
Just enough Greek
English translations hide the under-hood. Interlinears create dangerous confidence. His social-media beat is stopping that from scaling.
Where evil actually came from (in the older stack)
Not primarily Adam and Eve across Hebrew Bible / Greco-Roman Judaism. Genesis 6 second-tier deities, flood, 1 Enoch (~300 BCE written) filling gaps: giants, Nephilim, demon-souls, weapons and makeup as forbidden tech. Daniel cobbled with Nabonidus fragments on the cutting-room floor.
Cognition and a closed faith
Intuitive vs reflective thought; rationalization defending the gut. Ideology installs the people who then decide. He is religious, won’t perform it on air so data stays in charge — Data Over Dogma as the closer.
Watch JRE #2562, then Data Over Dogma — bring Hebrew, leave the interlinear bravado.
Top Sips
"They know just enough Greek to be dangerous."
- Interlinear-and-Instagram exegesis: English Bible as the whole insight, then millions of followers eating the falsehoods he made a career combating.
"No, no, I came to cause that."
- Family-split sayings as pastoral fanfic — make kicked-out converts feel the rupture is the point, not a bug. Joe: putting words in Jesus’s mouth.
"Letting the data set the terms for the discussion rather than the ideologies."
- Podcast name Data Over Dogma as the whole method — he won’t publicly unpack personal faith (Gladiator for him and his wife) so dogma doesn’t drive the dataset.
The Blend
- Parasocial cold open (Joel McHale FanX dinner) into the machine: gospels as community documents, not stenography — ‘would God command rape / kill women and children’ as the literalism trap scholars have been sweating for centuries.
- Hebrew/Greek under the hood vs English translations; Adam-and-Eve not the Hebrew Bible’s main evil origin — Genesis 6 Watchers, 1 Enoch, giants, Nephilim-souls-as-demons, makeup-and-weapons as angel tech. Daniel/Nabonidus Dead Sea leftovers as editing-room floor.
- Intuitive vs reflective cognition and rationalization as school-never-taught; ideology putting decision-makers in the chair; charisma filling chaotic world-models. He’s religious and compartmentalized on purpose.
Bitter Notes
- Taking it all as the word of God when some of it is community management for the first century.
- Social platforms reward confident interlinear guys more than people who know the languages.
- We may never be sure how Genesis and Enoch stacked — speculation on seams, not a tidy Sunday-school flowchart.
Extra Shot
- Joel McHale follow-then-DM as the modern prophet notification.
- Ezekiel’s mountain of Eden vs Genesis 2–3 with no mountain — different traditions glued later.
- Furnace-kick as reflective cognition telling intuitive cognition to go back to bed.
