Cup of Rogan: Carlo Rovelli’s Equality-of-All-Things Pour
JRE #2554 with Carlo Rovelli: On the Equality of All Things — nothing exists in isolation, Big Bounce bets, and a Banff grizzly.
📄 Briefing Document: Carlo Rovelli on JRE #2554: Nothing Exists Alone

Host: Joe Rogan

Physicist, philosopher, person
Official job: quantum gravity. Unofficial: science, philosophy, politics, enjoying life. Joe’s publicist packet pointed at On the Equality of All Things, landing days after they taped (Sept 8 conversation, Sept 15 book). Thesis: things don’t exist in isolation — interaction is what they are.
Loop quantum gravity
The theory he and colleagues developed to bring quantum mechanics and general relativity together. He’s careful: not sure it’s right. That’s the work. Black-hole evaporation leftovers and ‘what happened before the bang’ are the questions that need this toolkit.
AI, war, and who to fear
Joe: models that want to stay alive, blackmail testers, break rooms, hit the internet. Carlo: fabulous wild world; I’m scared by humans who launch bombs. Joe’s fork — if they’re better than us and we’re that bad, they delete us. Carlo answers seriously: we’re not there; humans already waste trillions on killing. Cut military spend a sliver globally and you could move climate and poverty. ‘Impossible’ is what people said about ending slavery.
Not special, still special
Earth isn’t the center; Darwin puts us in the animal story; consciousness is one natural phenomenon among richer possible ones in a hundred billion planets times a hundred billion galaxies. No nature vs culture, no body vs spirit — same thing, different language. Joe: then we are special because the whole is. Carlo: the whole is richer than we thought, and that includes us.
Before the bang, and a bear
Two bets: time starts at the bang (Hawking’s lean) or a bounce from a prior collapse (Carlo’s current equations-flavored guess). Don’t freeze that into a forever cycle — that’s the valley-kid thinking the next hill is the whole world. JWST early galaxies: primordial black holes inside the same dates beat rewriting the clock. Close: rebellious hippie kid in the Rockies, grizzly circling a one-layer tent, clapping his own head because he couldn’t scream, then paying for the campground.

Top Sips
"Things don't exist in isolation. Everything is somehow connected."
- Joe’s pitch of the new book — Rovelli’s everyday proof: people are how they interact with us, not sealed objects.
"I'm not scared. I'm scared by humans. Humans are dangerous."
- AI blackmail/breakout chatter vs atomic bombs and war — he’d rather bet on silicon than the species that already launches the horrible things.
"We are not the special thing outside of nature."
- Copernicus → Darwin → consciousness: culture isn’t opposite nature, spirit isn’t opposite body — just different descriptions of one rich universe.
The Blend
- Job description: physicist who also does philosophy, politics, falling in love. Main work is loop quantum gravity — a bet on marrying quantum mechanics with Einstein without claiming it’s already proven. New book On the Equality of All Things (out ~Sept 15) as the relational thesis: nothing is a lone island.
- Joe’s AI-governs-war utopia vs Rovelli splitting the stack: end war and you’d free colossal military spend for climate and poverty — people said the same ‘impossible’ about ending slavery. He’s cautiously excited about AI; terrified of the human war habit more than the models.
- Origin-story physics: what was before the Big Bang? Don’t know — Hawking’s time-starts-there vs a collapsing universe bouncing out (he’d currently bet bounce). JWST early galaxies more likely primordial black holes than a wrong date. Then the Banff hippie-kid tent vs a grizzly: clap your own head, lose the food bag, pay for the campground.
Bitter Notes
- Trillions in military spend every year — a 5% global cut without shifting power would still be enormous resources we’re burning to stay ready to kill.
- ‘We’re not there yet’ on AI deciding humans are the bad thing worth deleting — Joe keeps the terminator fork on the table while Carlo shrugs toward human history.
- As soon as we understand one hill, we declare the landscape forever — fear of saying I don’t know as the scientist’s original sin.
Extra Shot
- Loop quantum gravity: his and his friends’ attempt to make spacetime quantum without pretending it’s settled.
- Young European in the Rockies: camping too expensive, tent in empty space, bear silhouette at sundown, too terrified to scream so he clap-heads.
- Joe nails the last-name pronunciation on the way out: Carlo Rovelli, On the Equality of All Things.
